With the rise in development all over the world, a concern increasing parallel to that is pollution. Pollution results in the increase of different kinds of diseases and infections, which affect the general population of the world. Onychomycosis is an infection that damages or disfigures the toe nails. It is caused by toenail fungus. This fungus is also called ‘dermatophytes’. This kind of fungus prefers to live in dark and damp conditions. The fungus might live next to the nail or beneath it depending on how much it has spread and the conditions it attains. The fungus can attack any part of the nails in both our hands and feet.
Nail fungus usually prefers to attack the nails of the feet as it provided with more desirable conditions. It mostly affects the large toe nail and the smallest toe nail. The nail becomes yellow and thickened and if the condition is not treated it might keep getting thick and cause pain when the nail rubs against the shoes. As the condition gets worse the nail might even split and crack. Onychomycosis usually affects people in the older age group. Most patients range in the above 40 age group, however; this infection can also exist in children. Statistics show that more than twenty percent of the people in the age group of forty to sixty are a victim to this fungal infection. The infection can exist in people of all kinds of ethnicities and is generally seen equally in both men and women.
