Early Wednesday morning an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 rattled southern parts of Mexico, killing at least one person.
The earthquake which was a major one on the Richter scale, was felt as far as Mexico City where scared residents fled their homes and hotels to avoid any kind of building collapse. According to the officials in Mexico City, no injuries or causalities were reported and there was no significant damage to property or buildings.
As per reports of the United Stated Geological Survey, the quake had its epicentre in a sparsely populated mountainous region of Oaxaca. According to Tomas Herrera Sanchez, a police officer from Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, the nearest town to the epicentre, the quake felt very strong and many people got scared and left their houses.
The only casualty in the quake was Armando Lugo Hernandez, a 49 year old resident of the town of San Andres Huaxpaltepec, who was killed after a beam from his house’s roof fell on him after the quake.
Carlos Alberto Ramos, director of Oaxaca state Civil Protection, in a statement to media officials said that officials were currently trying to estimate the extent of the damage caused by the quake but it is highly unlikely that the damage was extensive.
The quake occurred at 2.20 a.m. local time and is being estimated to have occurred 12 miles below the surface.
