Mexican electionThe run up to the elections in Mexico had been marred by incidents of bloodshed and it seems that the bloodshed is going to continue till the results of the election are not declared.

When Mexico went to elections this Sunday, nobody thought that so much drug violence would ensue. A leading gubernatorial candidate was killed; a head dumped near the house of the candidate running for mayor, candidates arrived in bulletproof vests to cast votes; these were some of the incidents that marked Sunday’s election.

As expected, Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) won the election in nine states, according to preliminary results. According to Jorge Chabat, a political science professor at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching,”The PRI remains a big force in Mexico.”

One surprising fact regarding the elections was that for the first time in history PRI seemed to struggle for votes in Oaxaca, Puebla and Sinaloa, even though these states are considered to be PRI strongholds.

The elections which are being held for governorship of 12 states in Mexico have been affected by violence right from the start. According to some estimates PRI had been poised to take all 12 governorships due to its immense local support. But the attempt was thwarted by an alliance between conservative PAN party and the left-leaning PRD.
