United States President Barack Obama on Thursday called for a practical approach towards immigration reform bill that would enable the U.S. to maintain its immigration tradition. The president also urged the Republicans to support the bill.
Obama is his first speech on immigration reforms as a president said that “Without the Republican vote reforms that bring accountability into our immigration system cannot pass.” He also said that his administration has already started an initiative to strengthen the borders.
The President also urged the Congress to come up with a method to provide a legal status for the 11 million or so illegal immigrants that are already residing in the United States of America. He also said that the importance of immigration laws have increased due to the recent changes in Arizona’s immigration law, which has given police the authority to ask question people about their citizenship status.
According to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the first and the foremost step towards immigration reform should be securing the borders.
While Obama has put up a plan that opens new pathways to a citizenship status for illegal immigrants as well as the initiative to secure the borders, it is highly unlikely that the plan would pass in the Congress.
