The Gulf of Mexico on Saturday saw a buzz of activity as engineers began a complicated new procedure to collect all the oil that is spewing from the out of control oil well. They have also started working on contingency plans in case the original plan fails.
According to Kent Wells, BP senior vice president, said that the current cap that is directing 15,000 barrels of oil a day to a collector ship would be replaced in the next 4 to 6 days. This would enable the company to collect all the oil from the well.
The company said that replacing the cap would require the original cap to be removed, which may lead to increased oil spewing in the Gulf for a few days. He also said that the new cap would be placed on the well in the next 4 to 7 days and if by any chance the new cap is not effective, the engineers would replace it with an upgraded version of the current cap.
BP agreed to put in place the new cap after a request by Adm. Thad W. Allen, incharge of response effort, that BP should take advantage of the clear weather and proceed with the work to plug the leak completely.
