Curiously, the Internet has made prices all over the world very competitive, even when it is a service, and not a product. With a product, competitive prices are understandable – if the price of the good plus delivery is still less than what is being offered in your locality, then any consumer would want that product delivered instead of buying locally. But today, the Internet has even made the price of most services equally competitive, and none more so than in accommodations.

Take a look at Visalia accommodations, and Edinburgh, United Kingdom – the prices for five star lodgings are almost the same. Holiday Inn has lodgings in both places, so one might not think it strange that their prices stay the same across countries. However, even the more affordable Visalia lodging is comparable to Edinburgh’s cheaper lodgings – around USD 50 to USD 60. One would wonder why there is very little price differences, even with different standards of living.

While you might think that they are offering the same services anyway, you also have to consider that both places are tourist spots – Visalia has two national parks within arm’s distance, and Edinburgh is one big UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not that one place has more to offer than another, but that the two places offer very different things to any tourist, and at roughly the same price at that. Perhaps tourism has also become more competitive across countries, thanks to the Internet.
