AustriaAustria is definitely one of the most picturesque and beautiful countries out there in Europe, and if you are thinking of visiting Austria – that’s a great choice. This country is steeped not just in history but also in the arts and cultures, therefore you would be pleased to know that there is plenty you can see and do here.

For instance, why not go for some hiking in the Alps? When the snow has more or less melted, you can walk or even hike through the many varied landscapes of the Alps – if you like green forests, of if glaciers and rocks are your choice – you will definitely find them. If you want something of a gentle walk, then head for the Voralberg’s alpine pastures, but if you want some slightly strenuous trekking, then we suggest the Hohe Tauern National Park, which is slightly more demanding.

If you are interested in winter sports, then too, you can head to the Alps, as this is a major destination. It offers a lot in terms of snowboarding, skiing, curling, skating, tobogganing and sleigh-riding. Austria is also famous for its scenic steam train rides – you can book yourself for a ride one of the old 19th century steam trains, and watch the lovely Austrian scenery. You will pass through the famous village of St. Wolfgang in Salzkammergut – it’s definitely eye-catching!

If arts and cultures are your thing, then why not go the opera? Now you may be wondering how the opera in Austria could be different or unique from those in other parts of the world, but we tell you that there are! of course there are many opera performances in the major towns and cities of Austria, but that apart, you should definitely make the trip to Bregenz and the Upper City – to see St. Martinstrum – this has summer opera productions on the world’s largest floating stage! It’s truly an opera with a difference.

Austrian wine is famous, so don’t finish off your holiday before sampling it. You could take a guided tour through a few of the many wine-growing regions – like Southern Styria, Lower Austria, and even Burgenland. Most wines are white – such as the Riesling wine (which is actually quite famous in most parts of the world), but if red wine is your drink of choice, you will find that too – in Baden and Burgenland. Coffee and cake too, are up for grabs – Austria has a really famous coffee shop culture – which is called Kaffeehaus. Try the various cakes and puddings, and the different kinds of coffee. This is not a time to worry about calories – it’s all about enjoying yourself and experiencing what the country has to offer!

You should definitely check out the elegance of a traditional Austrian ball – do try to go to the Johann Strauss Ball – this takes place in a ballroom in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. You also must check out the Lederhosen Festival – which is held in Windischgarsten – you will be able to look at traditional Austrian apparel, and also have fun with beer and good humor.
