It had been long been rumoured that Julia Gillard would be Australia’s first woman Prime Minister, but the way it happened truly shocked everyone.
As a consequence of bad opinion polls and the approaching general elections, the Labor party on Thursday dumped Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for Julia Gillard, Kevin’s 48 year old deputy. In a news briefing Gillard said that she accepted the job with a lot of resolve, humility and enthusiasm.
According to Norman Adjorensen, a political scientist at the Australian National University, “Gillard is a good communicator and there is something about her that Rudd never had.”
Julia Gillard was elected to the Australian Parliament for the first time in 1998 and from that time onwards she has built a reputation as a quick thinking and a formidable debater who is never afraid of asking her questions and debating on issues of national interest. She is known to be a great admirer of women who juggle a career and family, without ignoring either one of them.
The move was taken with a view to focus on the next general elections which are less than an year away. The move is being viewed as a last resort method by the Labor party to improve its image before the next general elections.
