South Korean shipOn Friday, the United Nations Security Council condemned an attack that led to the sinking of a South Korean warship in March but did not directly blame North Korea for the incident.

The statement issued by the council, by not identifying the attacker, managed to get China’s support for approving a consent that aims to draw back North Korea for six party talks on the issue of ending its nuclear program. The move was also seen as a way to stop further alienation of North Korea.

The statement was described as a great diplomatic victory by Sin Son-ho, North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations. He also said that Pyongyang is hoping to continue the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula by engaging in the six party talks.

South Korea had blamed North Korea for sinking of its naval ship Cheonan in March, which killed 46 sailors and had taken the issue to the United Nations on June 4 requesting action to deter future provocative action by North Korea.

The United Nations condemned the attack that led to the sinking of the ship and said that the attack endangered peace and security in the region but did not name North Korea as the perpetrator of the attack.
