Albania is an ancient land that is very unique, and quite different from the rest of Europe. It has a culture that cannot be found anywhere else. You will find the pristine beaches on the Ionian Coast really beautiful, then there are also classical sites like Berat (which is quite ancient), there are also eye-catching mountain citadels. If you go to Tirana, you will be taken in by the crazy traffic, it’s symbolic of a bright and bustling city getting rid of its Stalinist chains. Albania has really come into its own, in the sense that you can sit peacefully in a bar and sip cocktails, listening to good quality rock bands. Northern Albania is a must-see, it’s a totally wild frontier, don’t be surprised by the blood feuds (which happen occasionally), and the bleak mountain landscape is really beautiful.
This apart, Albania is warm, it’s hospitable, and it offers quite a lot in terms of interest. There are many things you can do in this country. It’s not too big, so travelling around is easy, so you as a tourist would be able to see quite a lot. You should definitely check out the coastline – the clear turquoise sea will surely catch your eye. There are also many islands upon the coastline. For instance, there is Sarana, which is a southern city in Albania. If you do manage to go to Tirana, check out Dajti Mountain – this gives you a stunning green view of the whole capital. If you enjoy walking, you could walk around Butrint (which is incidentally a UNESCO world heritage site) – it’s a really memorable experience. And for those who like ruins, all the better, because Butrint offers up some really spectacular ancient ruins.
While you’re in Albania, you simply must check out the many castles this country has to offer. They’re beautiful, they’re old, and they’re really quite well-preserved. For instance, you can check out Petrela Castle near Tirana, Skanderberg Castle in Kruje, and Rozafa castle which is in Shkodra, as well as the castle in Berat which is still inhabited.
Of course, while you’re in Albania, shopping is a must. Pick up something unique for your friends and family back home – you can choose from alabaster bunker ashtrays or even raki – which are unique to this country. Eating out is generally a good experience – you will see that the cuisine has a primarily Turkish influence. This is because of 400 years of Ottoman rule. There are also Italian and Western European influences in the food. Do try the grapes in Albania – there are red, black, and green varieties available – which are used for the purpose of making raki.
You must try one of the Albanian stews – these include rice, onions, and potatoes. When you head to any Albanian restaurant, try Byrek – which is a kind of savory pie, usually eaten with spinach and feta cheese. Albania offers a lot in terms of travelling opportunities, there’s plenty to see and do, so make the most of it!
